Preservation & Progress Volume 29, Issue 2 23 Program #5 AM or PM: The 17th Maine in the WheatWheatfield with Licensed BattleBattlefield Guide Bill Trelease The heroic stand of the 20th Maine on Little Round Top is one of the best known Gettysburg battle stories. Yet, at roughly the same hour and barely half a mile away, another Maine regiment was also making a desperate stand. The 17th Maine—the Red Diamond Regiment— defended the southern end of the Wheatfield against repeated Confederate attacks, buying valuable time and playing a crucial role in the Union defense of that sector, albeit at terrible cost. We will explore the 17th’s actions on that fateful July 2nd, and discuss the story of an extraordinary regiment that, by war’s end had suffered the highest casualty rate of any unit from the Pine Tree State. Program #6 AM or PM: “The Battle was Grand, Sublime, and Awful”: The 26th North Carolina at Gettysburg with Licensed Battlefield Guide Eric Lindblade When the 26th North Carolina crossed the Potomac River as part of Lee’s Invasion of the North, they numbered over 900 men, the largest regiment in the Army of Northern Virginia. A few weeks later the 26th was a shell of the command it once was after suffering 762 casualties at the Battle of Gettysburg. We will follow in the footsteps of one of the most famous regiments in the Civil War and their role in the Battle of Gettysburg. Over the course of the three-hour tour, we will walk the ground and discuss the part the 26th plays in Pettigrew’s Advance of June 30, their participation in the afternoon fighting of July 1 against the Iron Brigade and the 151st Pennsylvania, and their actions on July 3 in the Confederate attack on Cemetery Ridge. We will likewise delve into the personalities, controversies, and myths that surround the regiment at Gettysburg. This tour will consist of mild to moderate walking with a few areas of uneven ground.
