1 Friends From Around the World This winter, Mr. Yoshitaka Shindo visited Gettysburg. Mr. Shindo is a member of the Japanese House of Representatives and former Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications for the Japanese government. He enjoyed a battlefield tour, and the Film, Cyclorama and Museum Experience at Gettysburg National Military Park. Mr. Shindo is also the grandson of Tadamichi Kuribayashi, who was the garrison commander of the Japanese forces at Iwo Jima during World War II. The Academy Award winning film, Letters from Iwo Jima , brought General Kuribayashi’s story to an international audience. 2 Rupp House Opens for the Season The Rupp House History Center offers visitors a glimpse of what life was like for civilians during the Civil War, particularly the John Rupp family who lived in the house during the Battle of Gettysburg, and the soldiers who fought in and around Gettysburg, through interactive displays and hands-on exhibits. The trees survived their first year in the ground and cider sale proceeds generated their highest return to date at $2,080. The gang gathered at the orchard not only to receive the check from Redding but also do some field work. The Recruits evaluated the trees, performed some pruning, and administered a natural deer repellent. The orchard was made possible thanks to the Friends of Gettysburg successful #GIVINGTUESDAY campaign. 26 Volume 29, Issue 2 Preservation & Progress F riends ootnotes From left: Kate Phiel, Elle Lamboy, Adam Redding, Ben Hansford and Mark Clowney
