Preservation & Progress Volume 29, Issue 3 15 25th Anniversary Late in July 1863, she received a letter from Henry F. Stewart who had been recovering from his own battle wounds. In June 1864 Sgt. Stewart’s widow and Henry visited Sallie. Her diary tells of the walks and talks they enjoyed together— around the college and the seminary and picnicking on Little Round Top. She and Henry fell in love and married on October 17, 1867. They moved to Jamestown, Pennsylvania, where Henry became the pastor of the United Presbyterian Church. Unfortunately, Henry became ill, too weak even to continue his pastoral duties, and died after less than a year of marriage before their child was born. Sallie raised their son, Henry Alexander Stewart, alone. He became a doctor (general practitioner) in Gettysburg and helped found the Annie B. Warner Hospital, the precursor of the Gettysburg Hospital. Dr. Stewart died in 1956. Sallie returned to Gettysburg and resumed her teaching career, this time at the “Colored School on Franklin Street” in Gettysburg. She continued to serve in various teaching and volunteer positions, as well as being a part-time seamstress, until her death in 1922. She is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery. It must have been son Henry who had the engraving made on her grave marker— it states: Daughter, sister & wife of a soldier Faithful unto death Above all A mother Sources: Conklin, Eileen F.
