municipalauthorities.org | 3 E ditor ’ s N otE The theme of this year’s Earth Day 2024 is Planet vs. Plastics and emphasizes advocating for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics, rapidly phasing out all single use plastics, urgently pushing for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demanding an end to fast fashion. One of the largest environmental entities of any community, in most cases, are municipal authorities, and solid waste authorities in particular play a major role in achieving Earth Day goals. They reduce and reuse waste by recycling and employ renewable energy technologies in everyday facility operations. This issue of The Authority explores some of the latest solid waste management industry trends and practices. Since its enactment 36 years ago, the Pennsylvania Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling, and Waste Reduction Act (also known as Act 101 of 1988) has led to significant advancements in recycling and waste management in Pennsylvania.
